I've been teaching college writing and literature courses since 1999, and I've taught at a wide range of institutions in the South, the Midwest, and the Pacific Northwest: community colleges, small liberal arts colleges, and large research universities. I've even taught at a government university in Abu Dhabi, in the United Arab Emirates. Wherever I've taught, though, my focus has always been on the students, because learning is what excites me most, and I love learning from my students as much as I love sharing what I've learned with students.

I'm also a working creative writer. I've published two chapbooks of short fiction and a novel (historical fiction), as well as dozens and dozens of short stories in print and online magazines. When I'm not teaching or writing, I'm editing and designing: I also work as production editor for an online literary magazine and occasionally serve as a guest editor for other literary magazines. In fact, I'm engaged with a wide network of professional writers, editors, and publishers, particularly here in the Pacific Northwest, and I love bringing my experiences with working writers into our classroom; my students can expect a lot of stories about working writers I've met or know personally. If you're also a writer, I hope you'll look into Arcturus, Highline's literary and arts magazine, or The Thunderword, Highline's newspaper!
